How to sell Android TV boxes 10 Tips you need to know

Once you know how to sell Android TV boxes the truth is there are millions to be made. Maybe you've tried and failed or perhaps you're looking at getting in to the one of the worlds fastest growing industries. Whatever your position, you need to know these 10 things if you are going to ever make it work.

The consumer benefits of owning an Android TV box are no secret and thousands of Android TV boxes are sold worldwide each day. People are buying all the time, so they may as well be buying from you.

We don't sell Android TV boxes, we used to but these days we create the software for the Android TV Box retailers. We did make some nice money selling the devices and we have coached 2 of our clients with these very tips to become millionaires through selling Android TV Boxes.

1. If you're going to sell android TV boxes you need to know where to buy.

Everyday I am subjected to reading something about Chinese cloned Android TV boxes. There are no clones, just generic Android TV boxes. The truth is that everyone buys from China and more accurately they buy from and

The tips here are use the review systems on the above websites and do a search for the model number on Amazon to find out what the consumers make of that particular model. Always consider the remote control quality and always make sure you specify the power plug required for your country.

2. Which device do you go for?

All that technical spec makes for a boring read. Quite frankly only a small amount of the information should be used to formulate your choice of Android TV Box that you want to start selling.

RAM - Go for nothing less than 2GB. The 3GB Android TV Boxes are starting to hit the market and if you can afford it then go for it but 2GB of RAM is currently enough.
HDD - 8GB of hard drive space is plenty for a hassle free streaming experience for the user. 4GB will do but 4GB can be used up faster than you realize if the HDD is not maintained.

After that just choose the device with the best reviews for the cheapest price. If you're super fussy the outer casing shape should be something that will look nice on any TV stand.

3. The China price is negotiable

They're hard to chip but trust me they can be chipped on price. If you can afford to order more to get a better price then do it. If you are already at your lowest price get them to throw in some service for you. These are some things you can get done for free that will assist your business.

Custom boot logo and video. Get your company branding on the device when it's turned on. It looks so much more professional than the generic boot sequence.

Install your streaming application. I am not talking about Kodi here, that should already be on the device. I am talking about your product made by that will push your business to the next level. You can have these apps designed to boot on launch of the device bypassing the generic Android home screen and you can get the supplier to set all of this up for you so you don't have to.

4. Import tax is a bit*h

Yep, it really is! You get your supplier all sorted, your devices are on their way and then you get this text from DHL.
"You owe us £499.00 import tax, click here to pay."

Unfortunately there is little you can do about this. You will have to pay import tax on goods you bring in from China. The fee is based on the paid value of the goods as a percentage. Here's a scenario that would reduce this fee. Imagine getting in touch with the supplier and asking them to adjust the package invoice so it states that you're paying 50% less than you actually are for the goods. This would reduce the tax paid dramatically.

We are not saying you should do this as tax avoidance is illegal. What we are saying is imagine if this actually happened. You could actually pay a lot less than you should which reduces your over heads and as a knock on your revenue can be higher or you can make your product cheaper and more appealing for the consumer.

5. Faulty units will cost you

Sad but true. You will have some faulty Android TV boxes. Testing them all yourself can be time consuming but if you're only a small operation it is time well spent. When you are building up customer trust you must filter out all faulty units. Don't worry though you can return them to China.
Returning items to China is a pain and the tip here is to wait until you have at least 25% of your usual shipment volume in faulty Android TV boxes before sending them back. The other kicker here is that you will end up paying for the shipping 3 times on these transactions. Once to get them to you, once to get them back to China and once again to get them back to you. It all adds up in the costs so you need to factor this in to your retail price.
By being firm with your supplier you may be able to work out an agreement where they throw in a few free units to cover some of your losses.

6. If your returns policy doesn't seem crazy then it isn't good enough

A returns policy that seems ridiculous in favor of the buyer is the right policy. Don't just have the policy but stick to it as well.

Something like "If this item doesn't reach you in 5 star condition or if you're not happy with your product within 30 days just send it back to us for a full refund. No questions asked".

This policy on top of the 12 month warranty gives the buyer a zero risk purchase. Purchasing is all about emotions and if the buyer feels safe with you then they will buy from you. The beauty of a policy like this is that 90% of customers will not return their item, even if they don't like it. So don't be scared of offering a crazy returns policy, what's the worst that can happen? You might sell a lot more devices?

7. Who are you selling to?

Take aim and fire. Know who your customers are and where you will find them. This will give you a marketing advantage to set up some really targeted adverts on social media.
Start in your local area and target the movies lovers, the sports lovers and in January the keep fit people. There are lots of great addons offering fitness videos and targeting these customers is a seasonal honey pot.
Do not bother hitting the Kodi groups, the IPTV groups or the cord cutter groups. They don't want your product and if they do they won't be buying from you, they'll buy from China on either Amazon or eBay.
A little tip, that could be considered naughty, get a twitter account and build up your following with people that might want your product. All you have to do is click the accounts for football teams, Netflix, amazon prime and start following their followers. A large portion will follow you back, once they can see your tweets start hitting them with the content and sales patter.

8. Ship your products same day if you can

The sooner the customer receives their product after they purchase the better you will look. We live in an age of everything must be instant and people are accustomed to this. Don't fight it, just go with it and do all you can to get that TV box to your customer in record times.
If you're planning on making this a side earner take 5 TV boxes all loaded up and packaged to work with you each day. When you get a sale pop the buyers address on the package and drop it in the post office on your way home.
Most sellers won't do this so you have an instant advantage over them if you can ship same day on all orders made before 2pm.

9. Stay legal and keep it simple

These are testing times for Android Box sellers at the moment. It seems most weeks someone is being squeezed by the authorities for selling devices with Kodi pre loaded with third party addons.
It's no joke at the moment. The risk of a day in court is a very real one but it is a risk that you do not have to take if you're prepared to make a small investment towards legalizing your sales.
The days of the fully loaded seller are numbered, the new age of sellers are taking the services at and because for as little as £9.99 you can not only legalize your sales but you can have a much more professional look with your own app and you can make the user experience a simple one click set up one.
It doesn't need thinking about, £9.99 for your own app and legal sales is something all sellers should be investing in.

10. It's not what you say, it's where you say it

One thing you have to be really careful with is not getting your merchant account closed down. Paypal and Stripe can and will close your account without an appeal if you seem to be in breach of anything that would look bad on the banks.
Don't go all guns blazing and over the top with "Free Movies" "Never pay again" "Cut the Cord" on your website. Keep your site clean.
How will customers know what they're getting? Well you tell them this in the sales funnel or social media advert. You can link to your sales page from anywhere and anywhere but your sales page is where you make the claims.
Link to your page from adverts, social media accounts, forums and blogs. Say what every you want to say in these medias but tread carefully on your sales page.

That's it. Just remember the top 10 tips and keep on going. Everyday should be a challenge to beat the previous days income. Week v week, month v month and year v year. Remember that you can do it, if you're failing it is not because you're useless, it is because there are some things you don't yet know. Continue to educate yourself and eventually you will be killing it.

  1. Great article. I would just like to ad that I have been setting up Barber Shops and Hair Salons to resell my boxes. They offer a captive audience and can demo the product while cutting hair!!! Just make up a nice sign and tape it to their mirrors. I am now setting up a reseller team to sell to the shops.

  2. Jim, great minds think alike. I just went into business with a local barber. I told him I think it would be great to do “Kodi parties” at local barbers and beauty shops. I used to do a similar thing when selling knock-off purses and sunglasses. Give a beauty shop owner a share of the profits, have her show off and promote the event for a few weeks, then schedule a weekday evening after hours at said salon, bring some wine and crackers, and sell some boxes.

  3. Great article. I wanted to know about av stream but the support sucks haven’t received answers on my questions. I wanted to know if you buy an app from them if it comes with content. And with content I mean channels and movies. Or do you gave to make a custom Kodi build to add the content. If you know the answer please help me out.
